The National Health Service (NHS) Pension Scheme is a defined benefit public service pension scheme designed specifically for NHS employees, including doctors. The scheme provides a secure and stable retirement income based on career average earnings.But with three different parts of the scheme in operation, it’s not the easiest thing to understand.
Michael will cover the basics of how the NHS Pension Scheme works. He will present the costs and benefits of the scheme, ill health retirement and the implications of the McCloud judgement.

Michael is a Chartered Financial Planner, NHS Pension Expert and the director and founder of Medical & General, www.medicalandgeneral.co.uk.
Having spent his younger years in Kent where he was brought up, he moved to London and pursued work in the banking industry before going to university and completing a Financial Services Degree. It is here his passion for financial advice ignited and the dream of running his own Financial Advice business formed.
Following his degree, Michael worked in Hedge Fund recruitment in the city before taking on a training role with Santander. Whilst working here, Mike and his wife, originally from Clyst St Mary, moved down to Devon to have their first child Freddie.
Quickly after moving to Devon, Michael took a role with Wesleyan Assurance Society, where he carved out his knowledge of the medical sector and the NHS Pension providing support and advice to GPs across the whole of Devon.
In 2014, the decision was made to fulfill the dream of running his own independent, holistic financial advice business, and Medical & General was created. Michael continued with his studies and became a chartered financial planner in 2017 ensuring he continues to provide clients with the highest level of support and service backed by a strong technical knowledge base.
